Management consulting executive search in the UK
Strat-Bridge is a London-based retained executive search boutique for strategy and management consulting. In the UK we place Partners, Principals and Directors into MBB, tier-one strategy houses, Big Four strategy arms, and specialist and PE-backed consultancies.
The UK is the most competitive of the five markets we work in, and the one we know from the inside. Every mandate is delivered personally by a partner of the firm, with 25+ combined years in consulting and professional-services search behind it.
What does the UK consulting market look like at Partner level?
It is London-centric, deep, and crowded with buyers. The UK consulting sector was worth around £21.8bn in 2025, up 3 per cent on the year before, according to the MCA Annual Industry Report 2026. That estimate is built up from MCA member firms’ fee income, and researchers using other methods put the market materially lower, and the Partner population that sells the strategy and transformation end of it is concentrated within a few square miles of the City and the West End. Manchester and Edinburgh carry real practices in public sector, financial services and energy, but Partner hiring decisions are still overwhelmingly made in London.
Four kinds of firm compete for the same people. The Big Four strategy arms, which pay well and hire in volume. PE-backed platforms, which buy and build practices and need Partners who can show a book in eighteen months. US firms entering or expanding in London, often with a single anchor hire to make. And DACH firms building a UK presence, which is a situation we are specifically called into, because we already know both markets and the Partners in each who have worked across them.
The result is a market where a credible Partner with a portable book receives an approach most months. Anyone hiring at this level in the UK is not choosing from a queue; they are persuading someone who has options.
What do hiring firms in London ask us?
Three questions come up on almost every scoping call. Who is actually out there in this practice, and who among them could move? What will it take, in package and platform, to make them move to us? And how does the market see our firm, honestly, against the firms we want to hire from?
The first two are answered by the written market map and the compensation benchmark in the first weeks of a retained search. The third is answered by the sentiment report we deliver in week four, which records what the target pool said about the client, anonymised and reported as themes. On our largest single practice build, that report reshaped the brief and the search went on to make 20 hires in twelve months.
The full list of what we cover, twelve practices across functional and industry lines, sits on our expertise page.
What moves a UK Partner?
Rarely money alone, though money is always part of it. The recurring reasons are a platform that lets them sell what they want to sell, a partnership that will let them build a team rather than inherit one, a credible route to equity or a senior title, and relief from a firm whose strategy has moved away from their practice.
Counter-offers are common in London and sometimes generous, so we test the reasons for moving in the first structured conversation rather than at offer. A Partner who is moving for the right reasons in week three is still moving in week eleven.
Where the Partner brings people with them, the search becomes a team move, and the sequencing, the covenants and the client-conversation plan need handling with more care than a single hire.
How long does a UK Partner search take, and how does the package work?
Our retained model is twelve weeks and four commitments: calibrate, map and approach, tell you the truth, close. Eight to twelve weeks from signed brief to accepted offer is typical, with a shortlist inside three to six weeks. UK notice periods at Partner level run from three to twelve months, and the longer end is becoming more common at the larger firms.
Compensation mechanics differ more between UK firms than most people expect: fixed versus variable, equity versus salaried Partner, how origination and delivery are credited, and what a book is worth in year one against year three. We do not quote figures on this page because they date quickly and depend on the firm. Our partner economics pages set out how packages are built, and revenue credit explained covers the mechanism that decides most Partner offers.
Which headhunters specialise in management consulting in the UK, and why does it matter?
A small number of firms do this properly. Several of the large global search firms run a professional-services practice alongside their corporate work; a handful of boutiques focus on consulting specifically; and there is a wider group of contingent recruiters who work the Manager and Senior Manager grades. Strat-Bridge sits in the boutique group and works at Partner, Principal and Director level only.
The difference shows in the questions asked. A generalist headhunter can find a Partner. A consulting specialist can tell you which of the revenue on their CV is actually theirs, whether their clients follow, and what their current partnership agreement will do to a move. At Partner level that is the whole job.
Candidates get the same specificity. If you are a UK Partner or Principal thinking about a move, our candidate pages explain how we work with you and what stays confidential.
How do you engage us for a UK search?
Start with a scoping call. We will tell you whether the search is winnable, roughly how wide the field is, and what the package will need to look like. If we think you can fill the role without us, we will say so.
From there, a written proposal sets out the model, the fee, the off-limits and the timeline. Retained search is the right vehicle for Partner and Director appointments; for broader Director and Manager hiring, or for a practice build, the five engagement models on our employer page cover the alternatives.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Which headhunters specialise in management consulting in the UK?
Fewer than you might think. The global search firms cover consulting through their professional-services practices, usually as one sector among many. A few London boutiques, Strat-Bridge among them, work only in consulting and only at senior grades. Below Director level the market is served mainly by contingent recruiters. Ask any firm you speak to how many Partner placements they made into consulting firms last year, and who ran them.
Do you only work in London?
No. London is where most Partner hiring is decided, but we run searches into Manchester, Edinburgh and other regional offices, and cross-border searches into Germany, Austria, Switzerland, wider Europe and the US.
How long does a Partner search in the UK take?
Eight to twelve weeks from signed brief to accepted offer, then a notice period of three to twelve months. A realistic plan for a Partner starting in a UK firm is six to twelve months from brief to first day.
What does a retained search cost?
Fees are quoted per mandate and set out in writing before we begin. Retained Partner search is conventionally priced as a percentage of first-year total target compensation, billed in instalments across the assignment; ours sit between 25 and 35 per cent depending on scope and seniority, and we quote a specific figure once we have scoped the brief.
Do you help DACH firms set up in the UK?
Yes, and it is a large part of our UK work. The usual pattern is an anchor Partner hire followed by a small team, and the anchor search has to answer questions about platform, brand recognition and economics that a domestic search does not. Ben Appleton leads our client engagement across DACH, and David Stone manages the candidate network behind these searches.
Can a UK search be run confidentially?
Yes. The client is not named in the approach until the candidate has been assessed and has agreed to proceed. Where the hire replaces an incumbent, we agree at the outset who inside the firm knows.
Do you work with PE-backed consultancies?
Yes. The brief is usually a Partner who can show a book within the investment horizon, and the package often includes equity or a management incentive plan. We help both sides understand what that is worth before offer.
What do you need from us to start?
A decision-maker available in week one and at shortlist, a position on compensation and title, and an honest account of why the role exists. The rest is ours.
